Photo and signature size for exam forms

Exam portals reject uploads over a few KB or a few pixels. Here are rules we read in official notices, why KB ranges catch people out, and how to pass.

Exam portals are strict, and their error messages rarely help. Get the size or KB range slightly wrong and the upload fails, sometimes close to a deadline.

The first rule: your own notice wins. Rules change between exams and years, even from the same body. While writing this, we found that widely repeated numbers no longer match the current notices.

Rules we've read in official notices

We only list what we've checked in the original document. If your exam isn't here, we couldn't confirm it, and you should use the numbers from your notice.

Why KB ranges catch people out

A range such as 20–50 KB has two traps.

Two definitions of a KB. Some systems count 1000 bytes and some count 1024. A file of 20,000 bytes is 20 KB by one count, and 19.5 KB by the other. Our tools aim for a size that passes either way.

The minimum. A small image of a plain signature can fall below the minimum, even at top quality. Raising quality is the first step. If that's not enough, a JPEG can carry a comment that adds bytes without changing the picture, and we'll tell you when we've done that.

Getting a clean signature

  1. Sign on plain white paper with a black or blue pen.
  2. Photograph it straight on, in bright, even light.
  3. Run it through a tool that whitens the paper and trims the space around it.

Before you submit

Open each file and look at it. Check that your face is clear, and that the signature is readable at its small size. Portals check the numbers, but a person may check the picture.

Frequently asked questions

Some portals count 1 KB as 1000 bytes and others as 1024. A 50.5 KB file by one count can be over 50 by the other. Aim a little under the limit to be safe.

Many exam forms set a minimum as well, such as 20 KB. A small, simple image can fall below it even at top quality. Raising quality helps, and a tool can add harmless padding to the file.

Treat them as a starting point only. Rules change between exams and years, even from the same body, so the notice for your exam is what counts.
