The image is reduced to a few representative colours. Near-duplicates are merged, and they're sorted by how much of the image each covers.
It's a WCAG contrast level. AA needs 4.5:1 for normal text, and AAA needs 7:1. These figures show each colour against white and black.
Very simple images may not have enough distinct colours, and we won't pad the list with near-identical ones.
